After the death of Alfred Bernhard Nobel on this day in 1896 it was revealed that his will left his fortune, made from exploiting his inventions of the explosives dynamite, smokeless powder, and gelignite, to fund a series of prizes for work promoting the welfare of mankind. The Nobel Foundation was formed, and the first prizes were awarded on the fifth anniversary of his death. The 1901 Winners were Jacobus Henricus Van't Hoff in Chemistry; Sully Prudhomme (pen-name of René François Armand) in Literature; Jean Henri Dunant and Frédéric Passy split the prize for Peace; Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in Physics; and Emil Adolf von Behring in Physiology or Medicine.

Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it. The man who knows how will always have a job. The man who also knows why will always be his boss. I am inferior of any man whose rights I trample under foot. Men are not superior by reason of the accidents of race or color. They are superior who have the best heart - the best brain. God grant that not only the love of liberty but a thorough knowledge of the rights of man may pervade all the nations of the earth, so that a philosopher may set his foot anywhere on its surface and say: This is my country. |
